Background:
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. As a result, the Cancer Society of New Zealand is very proactive in raising awareness levels regarding the dangers of sun exposure.
To support its ongoing effort to promote sunscreen use, the SUNFUN sunscreen applicator "ribbon" was developed for the Cancer Society of New Zealand as a practical means for applying sunscreen.
Problems and opportunities:
1. When applying sunscreen, certain areas of the body- especially the back, are difficult to reach and as a result sometimes go unprotected.
2. Existing applicators tended to be inconvenient and messy.
3. A new applicator had the potential to add value to the Cancer Society brand alongside its sunscreen products.
Key question:
How can sunscreen use be promoted while making its application more convenient?
Final proposal included:
1. Convenient, ergonomic applicator "ribbon"
2. SANTOPRENE- a thin, oil resistant material which facilitates easy application, cleanup and product longevity as well as low cost production.
3. Reusable packaging making the rolled up, compact size of the "ribbon" a convenient, easy to use beach accessory.
